Poor Vision

As we get older, normal changes occur that affect our vision. In addition to a general decline in eyesight, you may find that you are more sensitive to glare, find it harder to see things in dim light and that your field of vision is not as wide as it used to be. Cataracts and glaucoma are the common problems of eyesight, and it is easy to understand how changes in your vision can increase your chances of a fall.

Obviously, if you are very nearsighted, you might not notice that the corner of a rug is turned up. However, it is not always obstacles in your way that cause a fall. Other common causes are flooring transitions. For example, from carpet to a slippery tile floor or small changes in the elevation of what appears to be level ground, a patio stone that has been slightly upheaved. So, if your vision is poor, always be mindful of your surroundings and be observant of the surface you are walking on.
